ADesignStudio is proud to present, Basel Colour Special; a vibrant new edition to its Basel F1 Floor Lamp, designed in collaboration with artist, Dina Broadhurst.
Initially launched in April 2019, the original Basel F1 Floor Lamp, designed by ADesignStudio’s founder director, Alex Fitzpatrick, was largely inspired by his love for the works of the late Swiss sculptor, Alberto Giacometti; famed for his slender yet powerful sculptures, achieved through the process of reduction to create a slim silhouette.
“Giacometti’s sculptures were raw representations of the human soul, and he represented that by whittling away the form, until it cut away into its most essential being,” says Fitzpatrick. “I feel the Basel F1 was minimised down into its most essential form, while still emitting a functional amount of light.”
Taking on a new form, a recent collaboration with artist, Dina Broadhurst, has seen the Basel F1 welcome the creativity to customise the lamp’s light hue, with different colours and varying colour combinations, allowing the design to take on an evolved and vibrant life.
“The vision for the lamp’s gradient of colours began from a recent exhibition that Dina and I had both attended, where she felt inspired by the appearance of having one of the large-scale installations and the combination of light and colour; this coincided with moving to her new home and art studio” recalls Fitzpatrick. “The Basel Colour Special progressed very quickly from there, and within a week, we delivered the first bespoke edition to her home.”
While the lamp’s signature minimal form remains, the latest edition’s ability to customise and play with colours, has allowed the design to become more poetic in its story and personal in its experience.
“I feel like the Basel Colour Special really is stepping out of the background, as if shouting out, ‘here I am, and this is what I can do,” adds Fitzpatrick. “It’s like stepping out of a refined minimal environment, towards a live and vibrant art scene.”
Time spent at home is becoming all the more prevalent, lending itself to the design’s purpose to not only enhance the living experience, but also transport one’s imagination into a sentimental scene. “Light and colour have that ability to affect the mood of a space; we have a sunset edition in the office right now, and even on a rainy day, the light gives me a sense of calm and relaxation.”
