Sydney-Based Industrial Designer, Alex Fitzpatrick connects complex systems with consummate artistry at ADesignStudio, where he leads as Creative Director.
Alex pursues the aligning of scientific and poetic elements: a synergy from which his practice emerges. Built on a foundation of storytelling and establishing a strong visual language from the outset, Alex’s approach traverses the meaning behind an object; where it came from and how it came to be. It is this inherent need for deeper explorations and explanations, that has led him through his early creative career and provided grounds for a future in artisanal lighting design.
After working and studying in Alberta, Canada for several years, Alex Fitzpatrick returned to Australia with a background in Industrial Design and began work at Euroluce. Here he immersed himself in the business of lighting, learning about manufacturing and fittings narratives, all the while entering industry competitions, as well as collaborating with local artisans and makers on the side. “It was a great learning curve,” Alex says as he reflects on this period, “It was hard at the time but looking back it made for a stronger and more complex system now.”
Alex Fitzpatrick’s visionary slant turns profound inquiry into meaning. When the opportunity to show his body of work in Milan presented itself, this acted as a catalyst for the launch of ADesignStudio, where Alex is Creative Director. His use of the most innovative technology along with his superior craftsmanship optimises functionality and form and this is the core of Alex’s practice today.
As a creative, Alex’s inquisitive approach speaks to his ongoing examination of how light interacts with space and its effect on sensory immersion. Finding a deliberate balance between form and function, Alex pinpoints his motivation; “I always focus on the light and what the light needs to do, and how we use that light. The focus isn’t always firstly on how the fitting will look, but on what we need the light to do’.
