ADESIGNSTUDIO ILLUMINATES THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ‘DIM-TO-WARM’ AND ‘TUNEABLE LED’ LIGHTING

The ambience our designs are capable of creating is equally as important to us as their distinctive aesthetics. Yet when it comes to selecting or commissioning customised new ADesignStudio fixtures we’ve found that technical jargon can leave most minds in the dark. ‘Dim to warm’ and ‘tuneable lighting’ queries come up often, so we hope this sheds some light on the differences between them. 

Dim to warm’ or ‘warm dim’

‘Dim to warm’ or ‘warm dim’ refers to a light source reducing its colour temperature (CCT – Correlated Colour Temperature) when it’s manually adjusted via a switch (most commonly a knob). The light colour becomes increasingly warmer in appearance (i.e. from light yellow to a ‘deep candle flame’ orange) and the surroundings diffuse into darker states as the source dims. Many of you would be familiar with this effect with halogen lights, but LEDs are now more widely used. This option is ideal within hospitality projects and residences for those seeking sensory immersive effects.

Tuneable LED

Taking it up a notch, ‘tuneable LED’ functions on two channels as its lighting that can be individually adjusted in terms of both its intensity (light output) and colour temperature (the warmth of the LED) which is measured in Kelvin (K). For example, if you had a fitting with a range of 3000K (usually a mellow yellow) down to 1800K (the deep orange to a red shade of candlelight), you could run the light fitting at 100% output with 1800K. This differs from ‘dim to warm’ as 1800K on this kind of fitting would be close to a shadier, 20% output.
