A Personal Approach: Form and Materiality

The interplay of form, materiality and narrative remains pivotal in the artistic practice of ADesignStudio’s Creative Director Alex Fitzpatrick. Alex’s designs stem from a desire to illuminate the stories behind the objects, projects and spaces that constitute his body of work.

Alex’s approach to materiality along with his technical knowledge brings about an acute customisation of his work. In turn, his designs exude a certain sentimentality: one that can be traced back to a trip to Paris at a milestone within his career.

For Alex, his first visit to the French capital, where he received the Maison and Object’s ‘Rising Stars’ award, gives him cause to reflect. Before departing, Alex asked his wife if she’d like anything special while he was away. Though the perfume she had her eye on was already available in Australia, Alex decided the connotation of purchasing it abroad would be a more meaningful gesture.

Fast forward a few years, the perfume is finished and Alex is inspired to continue the sentiment, repurposing the bottle, of which he admired the simplicity and the story, as a nightlight for his daughter. Alex removed the glass neck and mounted the rest of the bottle onto a hammered brass LED engine. Experimenting with various LED colour temperatures and metal finishes, Alex examines the relationship between colour and light with our natural circadian rhythms to ensure the light would emit a soft, warm glow inside the room.

Form and Materiality

Acting as an exercise in reuse and repurposing, the process prompted further exploration into the vast possibility of evolving objects beyond their earlier beginnings. Lending this concept to his future works, Alex’s unique approach to from, materiality and mechanical elements come together in perfect harmony, and, most importantly, to tell a story.

From the iconic crackle glass effect to the endlessly variable compositions of LightGarden, Alex harnesses an innately inquisitive approach and a breadth of techniques to develop and refine each collection produced by ADesignStudio.
